GAME-BASED LEARNING II: LINES OF COMMUNICATION – Celestine Chime

Being one of my favourite Get Global activities, Lines of Communication is an activity used in training kids on the essence of teamwork, effective communication and attention to detail.

How the game is played:

Items needed

A drawing board and drawing pen

A diagram of an SDG

A time keeper

Activities

  • Lines of communication is played using two or more teams depending on the size of the class.
  • For each team, there are three communication levels: the headteacher, teacher, students (including one or two people selected to draw).
  • Each team is to draw the diagram which is only shown to the headteacher (or students if we use a bottom-up communication approach).
  • The headteachers of the various teams are allowed to view the diagram which is hidden in a place only accessible to them.
  • They are then required to describe what they saw only to the teachers who serve as an intermediary between the headteachers and students.
  • The teacher also describes what he was told to the students who are required to draw it on the drawing board.
  • The teams have a set time to complete the task and a winner is adjudged.

Being a global citizen means understanding that different people from different parts of a community, a country, or the world can come together as one team to effect change in the world. Creating change requires that we channel information from bottom-up or top-down depending on which position or situation we find ourselves. The Lines of Communications thus explain these communication processes in a more practical way to students.

My Personal Experience with MTW

Ben has been involved with Move the World since 2015 when we ran a collaborative Community Day with 1 Billion Africa, one of our partner organisations. Since then Ben has been involved with numerous projects for MTW and many collaborative programmes including a Young Leaders Retreat, Ammambr3, and Tech2Orphans. We are so happy to have him officially on board as a Get Global Facilitator now- here’s his story.

Doing what you love doing best is one of the easiest way to achieve satisfaction and total emancipation. I have been a beneficiary of some of Move The World Training programs throughout the years and I bet you it has really impacted me positively.
MTW gives you the space to be your self whiles reaching your capabilities. I had the chance to meet like-minded people who are ever ready to share, learn, play and eat with me.

As a young man with the passion to transform my society and help raise peoples standard of living, Move The World was one of my major springboard to achieving that dream.
Enrolling as Move The World Facilitator this year has been one of my greatest wins in 2020. It has placed me in an environment where I have discovered and recovered some of my God given potentials. It has given me the opportunity to learn more about the Sustainable Development Goals and impact it into the younger generation of the Medie Community.
With the kids, the joy on their faces during class time is more than enough motivation and satisfaction.  It has not only benefited the people of Medie community but my immediate family. They are now more conscious of the SDGs and doing everything they need to do to promote it.

Whatever this year brings… I’m looking onward and upward.

My Impact as a Facilitator

Written by: Michael Kwesi Woma

Get Global has impacted so many lives including mine and every time I hear or see things about innovations to improve and sustain the well-being of children and their families through educational activities, it makes me realise how Move the World (MTW)  has empowered and transformed me and my community to be a part of this amazing global community.

How amazing is it walking around my community only to see kid writing about things MTW has facilitated with them on walls in their community! Now those are the impacts am talking about, an impact that gets you involved in your community by simply sharing the knowledge you get to the rest of the people around you. Anytime all these events begin to circle around me I see myself being a part of a global-chain that is helping to bring change in my community.

Ever since my involvement with MTW I feel my sense of purpose has been enhanced with greater courage to build a strong and diverse relationship within my community and partner with communities, actively learning and understanding their realities. This has given me the amount of respect I receive from parents and kids in my community by calling my name (WOMA!!!) and when kids see this transformations they try to be like you in their own ways.

The sun has shined towards my face and now I see the shadows falling behind me and that is the joy i get when am with my global family!!!

Community Based Organisations and Why They are Needed in the Community.

Thoughts from Emmanuel Woma

‘Community based organisations (CBO) are nonprofit organisations that work at the local levels to improve lives for the community. The focus of these organisations are to build equality across the community in all streams – health care, environment, equality of education, access to technology, access to space and information for the disabled.’

Community based organisations are needed because they work alongside community members and focus on the root of the issues and challenges within the community. Working at a local level vs a national level.
CBO’s focus on the local elements, which help to eliminate some problems and issues in the community.

An example of a community based organisation in a town called Medie which is called Move The World. This organisation focuses on the youth and the community as a whole. Their targets are based on the Sustainable Development Goals which were launched in the 2015.

I got involved in this community based organisation through so many opportunities. I joined Move the World to be a Get Global facilitator because I want to be actively involved in community development.

Am excited about the role as a Get Global facilitator because I see it as an opportunity to help contribute more to my community.
We believe hard work is the means through which one can attain whatever goals they have in mind.

The Impact

Written by Margaret Osei

The first time I joined this team, (MTW) on the StreetsmART activity, the question I asked myself was ‘do they always work with kids?’
Well I thought it was a difficult task because I had not work closely with kids. Moving on a few months, I joined the great team which I was inspired to work with.
What motivated me the most was to see more young people like me who seek to make change which reflects in their lives, community and generation.
Today in our Get Global project, there has been a lot of experience sharing from facilitators and kids. The role of MTW as a Community Based Organisation (CBO) has a great positive impact in the lives of people in communities like Medie, in which I live.
For me I think I have really made it through because I enjoy learning from kids and also guiding them to know more about themselves and the world at large.

This makes me think that MTW is in a good shape to help communities grow and I look forward to taking that step with them.

Who Am I?

My Experience with MTW – Habiba Abdullah

For the past few weeks, I have been engaging you (audience) requesting for your support to like, share and take insights from post on Move The World’s page.

I owe you a lot right? I believe you’d love to have some insight about MTW and experiences I and my community (Medie) have had through its rich programme dubbed Get Global

Move the World is a charity that provides experiences and opportunities for young leaders to create, develop and implement projects in their communities.
Its framework is focussed on building self confident and creative citizens who can feel empowered to do more and have positive impact on others.

As things change rapidly in our world today, MTW deem youth as important world’s development driving force

For that reason and many others, MTW appoints facilitators who are making and would love to make difference in their communities to be confident ambassadors of Move the World. Be capable of delivering sessions on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to generations. Children between 9-12 years.

The past 2 years with MTW has been educative, hilarious, impressive and of course challenging! You know how stay and work at home could be fun but challenging right? How about creating content from home with all creativity you can think of???

My experience with MTW has increased my passion for children and education as well as learning. The rich curricula will leave you with memories!

Created an employment avenue to support me reach my potential.

Equipped me with skills, experiences and understanding of work with children. Diverse space and environment created by MTW will make you appreciate children to create a well defined connection.

An in-depth knowledge to appreciate learning abilities with children

Developed my thinking and problem solving skills and

Improved my personal development and creativity. #Covid19 plans put in place by the wonderful Team aided this process.

In their quest for youth to spearhead development in their communities and beyond, it introduced an educational programme dubbed Get Global
Get Global is an exceptional 7 months project that challenge students and youth to think about the World. It harness their capabilities as global citizens with focus on the first 6 Goals. #NoPoverty #ZeroHunger #GoodHealth&Wellbeing #QualityEducation #GenderEquality #CleanWater&Sanitation

If I have gained priceless benefits and experiences from MTW, can imagine what the community holds?

Not only is MTW good at programming but Facilitators are their Core!!

The Flip Side of COVID – Ben Hayford

*A Call For Attention*

The general pandemic has really come to change our style of living. People are becoming more conscious of their health. Governments and world organisational bodies are paying more attention to health and it related issues. The World Health Organisation is under immense pressure by its members to ensure that the right thing is being done. Under the sustainable development goals under goal number three talks about good health and wellbeing. Millions of dollars are released by these world bodies for medical research and medical infrastructural development so as to improve livelihood. Covid19 pandemic has come to reveal the various health loopholes our mother earth is facing. This deadly virus has really come to expose countries with poor health sectors hence the need to take critical look at it. Even though Africa is the less hit continent with regards to this pandemic but it is the most poorly prepared continent with regards to Covid 19. According to quartz.com, Africa has about one doctor to every 5000 people. Zeroing down to the Sub Saharan Africa, there is a total deficit of 1.8 million health workers according to WHO report 2013. This is even expected to hit 4.3 million by 2035.

This pandemic season is a wakeup call for African leaders to join forces for the development of their health sector. I was highly elated when I found out some countries like Ghana, Rwanda, Madagascar and the likes has moved a step further in the fight against Covid 19 by setting up companies to produce locally manufactured PPEs, ventilators and test kits. There is this overall general concern on personal hygiene in Africa since this pandemic lifted its ugly head, lol. As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of inventions, this pandemic has led to the some technological discoveries in Africa for that matter Ghana. People are coming out with creative and innovative ideas of manufacturing wash hand machines and other equipment which are aiding in the fight of Covid 19. These inventions has made it easy for people to wash their hands frequently to minimise the spread.  In my view, I will say Covid 19 has opened a very great opportunity for Africans in the area of technological Advancement.

This pandemic has also led to a new style of living which is the use of nose mask. Everybody is now wearing face mask on a daily basis as a means of self-protection against Covid 19. A lot of entrepreneurs in Ghana in the fashion field has taken this up to the next level by producing fashionable nose mask at a cheaper price for people to buy.  It has also created a lot of jobs for people in this abnormal times in Ghana.

This use of hand sanitizers has also become the order of the day. African governments are investing hugely in local industries in the production of hand sanitizers in large quantities for the general public. People are becoming more health conscious. Even though Covid 19 has brought devastating effect to mother earth however it has reoriented our mode of thinking and set us on the path of development particularly, our health sector on most part of the world especially Africa. This is what Move the World through the Get Global Programme is striving to achieve, changing mindset, development through innovation and creativity and imbibing the can do spirit.

This is an opportune time for Africans to rise to the attainment of goal number 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is attainable only if we put our mind to it.

My Joy As A Facilitator – By Israel Fugah

For me, the joy in helping facilitate a session in the Get Global Programme is not necessarily what the Lead Facilitator and I get to train the young students in but more importantly, what we get to build together – collectively!

Over a period, I’ve observed highly successful facilitation is not just embedded in knowledge but in the ability to speak to the hearts of your audience.

Before facilitators are assigned schools, MTW makes it a priority to take facilitators through series of trainings with resources delivered at their disposal to ensure proper preparation is done before, during and after Get Global sessions. Yet for a facilitator to be able to deliver a productive session, he or she must understand the art of engaging the students with his or her heart!

Facilitation is a real giving work that requires one to be real with themselves and the audience. For me, helping shape the minds and hearts of the young ones as Global Citizens rewards me with a sense of fulfillment.

That I get to hear a student quote Kofi Annan with respect to Education or see them to work together makes me feel honored!

My joy is made complete when these young ones tend to respond to our sessions by pouring themselves back into us in unimaginable ways!

Mother Earth – Patricia Acquah

As a change agent and an advocate for the SDGs, I was struck as I attended to my chores; I realised the difference this pandemic has brought in achieving the SDGs. Whiles the joy of achieving goal 13(Climate Action) is on a good course, Goal 3(Good health and well-being) is gradually deteriorating due to the massive social and economic impact of the pandemic in the lives of families, individuals and the world as a whole. My heart is sadden because one SDG is being achieved, the other is being affected which is causing mother Earth to bleed.

From Southeast Asia came COVID-19 to invade the world, turning sharply here and there “like a plague of locust wrecking what was once full of life.
Sweeping off mother earth’s feet like the sea sweeping the sand from her shores. She bleeds, she bleeds, mother earth bleeds as she stares helplessly at the passing of her beloved children, humans, being vandalised by an invasive Alien species “Coronavirus.”

Some might say on the other hand, this could also lead to restoring her normal climate. But her effort to redeem her children have been a strong tag of war but she is determined to triumph!

She yearns for her children to adhere to the preventive measures by washing their hands with soap under running water or the use of alcohol base sanitizer, social distancing, and wearing of face mask. Anyone who does not adhere to these faces the wrath of this virus.

Let’s stay safe for Mother Earth

Mindfulness: 7 Incredible Lessons Grasped! – Habiba Abdallah

“How could you have predicted that you would be profoundly affected by this pandemic? Remember life journeys birth lessons.”

You may be unaware of some events but they still have great sway over you, transitioning you from one trail to the other. You are differently introduced to every episode, from no to low impacts that just keep you going; those that become part of you, increase your passion, motivation, energy- which makes you feel obstacles no longer matter; to other occurrences that change your direction.

In understanding these episodes, you’ll agree with me that we tend to overlook the ones with no impacts on directions we take and rather focus on others that boost and gear our directions.

Predicting and envisioning events boost our intellectual, emotional and social skills, whereas unpredictable events affect our personal development by placing strenuous pressure on finances and relationship with work colleagues as well as loss of identity and self confidence.

However, sometimes unhappy events such as #Covid19 unveils inner personalities, introduce us to loved ones and propels us to move forward faster and do bolder things.

In juxtaposing both predictable and unpredictable events in my life, permit me to walk you through 7 incredible lessons I have learnt during this pandemic;

  1. Now more than ever I love staying at home with my mum and spend more time together.
I was always moving from volunteering works to school paying little attention to my family. My mum’s ailment during this pandemic, studying from home and schools’ closure influenced me to spend more time with family.
This decision but to make things more positive has taught me I have to find alternatives to make this a reality.
  2. Bravery: when life demands more than you are used to or can handle, Persevere!
If the other part of you feels like giving up, Persevere! And you feel a task is difficult, Persevere!!!
  3. Online studies took over in Ghana with such a shaky system leaving students on their own fate. From losing a test, catching up on online lectures to writing tests and exams online. Such a crazy moment enhanced my ability to embrace change and to stay updated.
  4. Blaming the world for this pandemic will not push burdens off my shoulders, it rather disempowers me. I would rather take charge and help make myself and others happy in the best way. This will help overcome setbacks and disappointments. #Happiness is a choice
  5. As schools are closed and economic activities take a halt from the pandemic causing untold human suffering, I realised how working/volunteering whiles studying from home is challenging. Setting priorities can be difficult during these times when you have family, work, education merged into one.
  6. I must confess that I didn’t enjoy farming when my once dad took us to his farm, but I have cultivated a habit of practicing Get Global Project Grow a Bean on SDGs #2 which has made me appreciate small things and I’m enjoying farming with my dad now.
  7. Unlearning lessons that do not serve me can help change my life.

“In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity” ~Albert Einstein

The Challenge is on all of us!!
